Church burial vault of N. I. Pirogov

Nikolay Pirogov died on November 23, [N.S. December 5] 1881.

After his death the body was embalmed by St. Petersburg’s doctor David Vyvodtsev. For further preserving of Pirogov’s body, a widow Aleksandra Pirogova bought a piece of land in the cemetery, where later the burial vault was built and where the embalmed body was placed.

In 1885, according to the project of an architect Victor Sychuhov over the burial vault the church was built. A wonderful temple-chapel was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas. During the holidays of the Orthodox Church and Pirogov’s Remembrance Days services are held at the church.
